What is the Macula?

The Macula is a small, delicate, area of the retina located at the back of the eye, made up of light sensitive cells. The Macula is the part of the eye responsible for our central vision, allowing us to see fine detail clearly and is essential for activities such as reading, writing, driving or even recognising faces.

What is the Macular Pigment?

The Macular Pigment is a protective yellow filter, made up of three macular carotenoids Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-Zeaxanthin.

Lutein is the dominant carotenoid around the periphery of the macular, with Zeaxanthin gathering in the highest concentration around the centre and then finally with Meso-Zeaxanthin dominating right at the very centre of the macular where vision is at its sharpest.

This macular pigment acts similarly to a pair of natural sunglasses within the retina, absorbing the harmful blue and UV light, present all around us in sunlight, car headlights and computer screens and protecting the delicate cells inside the macular from oxidative stress.

The Macular Pigment therefore plays a critical role in helping to maintain a normal, healthy eye function.

Boosting the diet with 10mg Meso-Zeaxanthin, 10mg Lutein and 2mg Zeaxanthin - can lead to significant improvements in the protection of the delicate macula.
